Oikos East Africa, a Tanzanian no profit organization that works since 1996 to promote environmental conservation as tool of socio-economic development is searching a Tourism Programme Officer.

 

POSITION:   Human Wildlife Conflict Field Officer

COUNTRY:   Tanzania

PROJECT:   “Greater Kilimanjaro initiatives to enhance  community participation in

sustainable conservation of the trans frontier ecosystem and wildlife” Project funded by EuropeAid

DUTY STATION: Enduimet WMA (Longido district); Engutukoit Village (Arumeru District); Arusha town.

DURATION:   12 months (renewable for others 2 years)

STARTING DATE:  Junest, 2018

 

General duties: The Human Wildlife Conflict Field Officer works directly with village crop protection teams on a day-to-day basis in the field during crop protection season, to prevent human wildlife conflict and crop destruction.

The HWCO is the liaison between Enduimet WMA, communities and Oikos, and is responsible for communicating each individual community’s issues and for finding appropriate and customized solutions

The HWCO will act under the supervision of the Project Coordinator, the Project Manager and according to the project activity design and donor procedure.

 

HWC Mitigation

  • Advise communities about areas where new teams are required and provide advice to communities about how to support VCP teams through developing relevant bylaws and regulations.
  • Work with village VCP leader in planning any activities.
  • Support establishment and training of new VCP teams.
  • Provide training and capacitate VCP teams on proper use of crop protection toolkits.
  • Maintain existing VCP teams and encourage these teams to spread VCP participation to other members of the community and other communities.
  • Train the VCP teams to act as ambassadors for crop protection by identifying HWC challenges on an ongoing basis and communicating these directly to village leaders.

 

Toolkit and equipment management

  • Manage the distribution of HWC toolkits and tools.
  • Keep records about the number of toolkits distributed in each village.
  • Monitor the use of equipment in protecting village crops.
  • Carry out toolkit maintenance and provide advice to VCP teams on care of these toolkits.
  • Report all damage to equipment to the HWC Coordinator and return damaged equipment to the Honeyguide office.

 

Data collection

  • Ensure that quality data about HWC incidents is collected daily as required by the WMA and villages that surround the WMA.
  • Submit HWC incident data to the WMA manager on an ongoing basis to be used to develop future plans for HWC mitigation.

 

Liaison with HWC Program Coordinator

  • Ensure the HWC Program Coordinator has clear information about the progress of the program, and provide advice on the best strategies to be undertaken going forward.
  • Work with HWC Program Coordinator to develop innovative HWC mitigation plans.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Diploma in Wildlife Management
  • At least 2 years of proven, referenced experience in the field of crop protection
  • Capacities to plan, implement and monitor field activities.
  • Proven ability to coordinate with a team
  • Experience in Enduimet WMA or other WMA in the field of crop protection will be considered an added value.
  • Conversant in English.
  • Swahili knowledge is imperative and Maasai language knowledge will be considered an added value
