South African Institute of Race Relations Bursary 2020-2021
ABOUT THE COMPANY – SAIRR
The South African Institute of Race Relations (SAIRR), established in 1929, is a research and policy organisation based in South Africa. The aim of the institute is to investigate social and economic conditions (including inequality, poverty) within the country and distribute the findings, as well as to encourage economic growth.
SAIRR have been providing educational funding to disadvantaged South Africans since the year 1935. As of 1980, the Institute has awarded over R220 million in bursaries, which has been a significant contribution to economic empowerment within the country. Funding has been granted a cross a range of fields, including business and commerce; medicine, health sciences and dentistry; science and engineering; education; law and arts
Among the over 3 500 students that have received funding, is the late Mr Nelson Mandela, who was granted a bursary in the late 1940s to the value of £120.
ABOUT THE BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED
IRR bursaries will be awarded to students in various fields of study, who are studying towards a degree or diploma qualification. Please note that postgraduate and Honours funding is not currently available.
Shortlisted candidates will be contacted by 30 September 2018 at the latest – if you do not receive any feedback by then, regard your application as unsuccessful.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
- South African citizen
- Completed Matric OR currently in Matric
- Studying or intend on studying towards a first degree/ diploma qualification (NOT postgraduate studies)
- Studying or intend on studying at a recognised South African tertiary institution
- Proven financial need
HOW TO APPLY FOR THE BURSARY

Applicants will be shortlisted and contacted by 30 September, where they will then be required to submit additional documentation. The documentation must reach the IRR by 15 November latest (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application be disregarded).
You may be required to submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your online application:
- ID document (certified copy of)
- Matric certificate, if completed Matric (certified copy of)
- Matric latest results, if currently in Matric (certified copy of)
- Full tertiary academic record, if currently in University (certified copy of)
