In a recent announcement by the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB), the 2023 Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) results have been released, showcasing an improvement in student performance. A significant increase in the number of students achieving Division 1 grades was reported, alongside a reduction in examination failures. Out of the 361,695 candidates who sat for the exams, 64,782 (17.9%) attained Division 1 status, a notable rise from the previous year’s 13.5%. This improvement means that 95.9% of the examinees, totaling 329,939, are eligible to advance to the next educational level post-UCE.
The 2023 exam session saw 364,469 students register, with a near-even split between male (180,471) and female (183,998) candidates. Of these, 361,695 appeared for the examination. Female candidates outperformed their male counterparts in English, while males led in subjects such as History, Geography, Sciences, and Commerce, with significant performance disparities.
This year’s results mark the last under the current curriculum, as the Ministry of Education plans to introduce a new competence-based curriculum to bridge lower and upper secondary education.
